For the original sketch on location of the Tantallon castle ruins, I had to suit up in all of my wind and waterproofs to be able to sit by the cold sea for an hour while I painted. Setting up my easel on a rocky outcropping on the coast of Scotland, I gripped my palette against the wind and captured that first edition of this painting, there under the shadow of the cliff and in view of the castle.
